Shrapnel Update: New Features and Competitive Action

Shrapnel's New Updates: A Game Changer in Early Access

In the ever-evolving world of gaming, the introduction of new features can significantly enhance player engagement and retention. Shrapnel, the much-anticipated first-person shooter developed by Avalanche, has made strides in this regard with its latest updates for early access players on PC via the Epic Games Store. The release of the Shrapnel Training Exercise 2 (STX2) not only adds new gameplay elements but also introduces a marketplace for premium cosmetic items, marking a pivotal moment for the game’s economy.

Key Features of STX2

The STX2 update rolls out several exciting features that enhance gameplay and player interaction:

  • Marketplace for Premium Cosmetics: Players can now purchase in-game cosmetic items using the game's SHRAP token, a significant step towards creating a sustainable in-game economy.
  • New Equipment Options: The introduction of a new submachine gun and a suppressor attachment allows for quieter gameplay, adding strategic depth to encounters.
  • Enhanced Environment Art: The update features improved visuals, making for a more immersive gaming experience.

According to Mark Long, CEO of Shrapnel, "The debut of our marketplace and premium cosmetics marks a pivotal milestone in our journey towards a unique Shrapnel economy that rewards creators and players in new ways."

Cosmetic Pricing and Future Plans

The cosmetic items available for purchase range from common to legendary skins, with prices structured as:

  • Common Skins: 5 SHRAP (approximately $1.40)
  • Legendary Skins: 30 SHRAP (approximately $8.25)

Although players currently cannot loot cosmetics from one another, this feature, along with options to sell, trade, and create user-generated content, is slated for future updates. There is still uncertainty regarding whether these cosmetics will be represented as NFTs, which remains a topic of interest within the gaming community.

Rewards and Community Engagement

Shrapnel continues to engage its community by rewarding those who own the game’s Operator Collection NFTs, Extraction Packs, and Partner NFTs with various cosmetics and loot. Furthermore, partnerships with entities like Superverse, BoDoggos, Alchemy, and NeoTokyo will see weapon cosmetics airdropped to their communities, fostering a sense of belonging and excitement among players.

Competitive Edge and Player Growth

Alongside the STX2 update, Shrapnel is running a competition where players can earn SHRAP tokens based on their leaderboard standings. Over $82,000 worth of SHRAP tokens will be distributed among participants from Wednesday to Saturday, incentivizing competitive gameplay and engagement.

Notably, Shrapnel has achieved a remarkable milestone with over 100,000 active player accounts to date. To access the early access version, players need an Extraction Pack key, which currently starts at $20.

Having successfully raised $20 million in a Series A funding round last year, the momentum behind Shrapnel is palpable.

The Road Ahead

As Decrypt's GG recently observed, while the original version of Shrapnel's early access game shows promise, it remains a work in progress. The rollout of STX2 has certainly elevated expectations, and the excitement surrounding the game is palpable as it gears up for a full free-to-play launch in 2025. The innovative approach to in-game economies, coupled with community engagement and competitive elements, positions Shrapnel as a noteworthy entry in the realm of crypto gaming.
