Ethereum Sentiment Hits 4-Month Low — Whales Buy $162M

Ethereum whale buying $162 million as social sentiment hits multi-month low

Everyone Thinks Ethereum Is Done. The Whales Disagree — and They're Betting $162 Million on It.

As the chief editor of ethdan.me, I've learned to be suspicious of moods. Crypto has them — violent, contagious, irrational moods — and right now, the mood around Ethereum is the gloomiest it's been in months. Scroll through X, Reddit, or Telegram and you'd think ETH was heading to zero.

But here's what the gloom merchants aren't telling you: while the crowd was doom-posting, the biggest wallets in crypto were doing the exact opposite. In the past week alone, Ethereum whales accumulated roughly 60,000 ETH — worth about $162 million — even as social sentiment toward ETH sank to its lowest point since June. Let that sink in. The little guys are terrified. The big money is buying.

So which side is right? Grab a coffee. Let's dig into what the data actually says, why it matters, and what could come next.

What's the Big Deal? Ethereum's Sentiment Crash by the Numbers

Let's start with just how bad the vibes have gotten. According to crypto analytics firm Santiment, social media sentiment for Ethereum has plummeted to multi-month lows as October kicked off. The key metric: for every bearish comment about ETH on social platforms, there are now only 0.89 bullish ones. Anything below 1.0 means the bears outnumber the bulls — and this is Ethereum's lowest reading since June 7. XRP looks even worse at 0.67, its worst mark since August 17.

And the fear has a real-world echo in the markets:

  • ETF flows flipped: Ether ETFs saw net outflows of about $118 million over just three trading days ending October 1, while Bitcoin ETFs attracted fresh inflows over the same stretch.
  • Price under pressure: ETH closed around $2,670 on October 2 — its lowest close since September 20 — and is hovering near $2,700 as the new week begins.
  • The "Uptober" myth is cracking: October is historically crypto's favorite month, but the last two Octobers ended red for ETH. The crowd is bracing for disappointment before it even starts.

Santiment's own analysts add an interesting twist: they say deep fear like this can create a contrarian setup for a rebound — though they caution that fear alone never guarantees one. In other words, the sentiment crash is real, but it's also the kind of signal that smart traders have learned to read very carefully.

Why You Should Care: The $162 Million Whale Plot Twist

Now for the part the doom-scrollers missed. While sentiment was crashing, on-chain data told a completely different story. Crypto analyst Ali Martinez, tracking Santiment data, reported that over the same week:

  • Ethereum whales bought: approximately 60,000 ETH added — roughly $162 million at current prices.
  • Bitcoin whales sold: approximately 30,000 BTC dumped — roughly $2.52 billion — into sideways price action.
  • XRP whales sat still: holdings basically unchanged near 3.9 billion XRP.

Why does this matter so much? Because this isn't a broad macro panic. If big money were simply fleeing crypto, whales would be selling everything. Instead, they're rotating — trimming Bitcoin and loading up on Ethereum at the same time. That's asset-specific conviction. Somebody with very deep pockets looked at the same fearful market everyone else sees and decided ETH at these levels was a buy, not a sell.

And the price is cooperating with the thesis: despite the miserable sentiment, ETH hasn't collapsed. It held roughly flat through the gloom. That's the classic tell of sellers being exhausted while buyers quietly accumulate.

Three Reasons Whales Are Buying Ethereum While the Crowd Panics

Whales don't tweet their reasons. But if you connect the dots, three plausible drivers explain why big wallets are accumulating ETH precisely when sentiment hits rock bottom:

1. The Contrarian Playbook: Buy Fear, Sell Euphoria

This is the oldest trick in the book, and it keeps working because humans keep being human. When bearish comments outnumber bullish ones by this much, selling pressure is often already exhausted — everyone who wanted to sell has mostly sold. That sets up the perfect conditions for a short squeeze: bears pile on, prices refuse to drop, and the moment momentum flips, those same bears are forced to buy back in, accelerating the rally. Santiment explicitly flagged this dynamic. The whales may simply be front-running the squeeze.

2. October Actually Has Catalysts

Beneath the fear, Ethereum's calendar is quietly busy. The Glamsterdam upgrade activates on the Sepolia testnet on October 6 — a meaningful step toward changing how gas is charged and how efficiently the network processes blocks, with a mainnet date to follow. Meanwhile, the institutional calendar keeps turning: Citi just raised its 12-month Ether price target to $3,028 from $2,240 on October 1, citing increased crypto activity and renewed ETF demand. September alone saw $832 million of inflows into Ether ETFs, so the three-day outflow blip looks more like a breather than an exodus. Whales with a multi-month horizon are buying the dip the crowd is fearing.

3. The Rotation Trade: Out of Bitcoin, Into Ethereum

Remember the numbers: Bitcoin whales sold $2.52 billion while Ethereum whales bought $162 million. That's not a coincidence — that's rotation. Bitcoin surged to fresh highs in September, and large holders appear to be taking profits on BTC while repositioning into ETH, which is still trading about 46% below its August 2025 peak and well off its highs. Relative to Bitcoin, Ethereum is the laggard — and laggards are exactly what value hunters buy. If even a fraction of Bitcoin's profit-taking rotates into ETH through October, the whale accumulation we're seeing now could just be the first wave.

Ethereum Price: The Levels That Actually Matter

All of this sentiment and whale talk is fun, but you're here for the price. Here's the honest map, no hype:

  • The floor: Around $2,645 — the support level that held through recent chops. A close below it would signal a breakdown from the sideways range.
  • The ceiling: Roughly $2,775 to $2,800. Analyst Ted Pillows says ETH needs to reclaim $2,800 on a weekly close to restore bullish momentum — that's the gate before anyone can seriously talk about $3,000.
  • The prize: Crypto.news' Ethereum price model gives October a base scenario near $3,034, with a bullish estimate around $3,641. Longer term, analyst Ali Martinez notes ETH has traded inside a rising monthly channel for five years, with the upper boundary near $5,000 — and a break above it could project toward $8,800.

I'll be straight with you: a move to $3,000 this month requires clearing that $2,800 wall first, and the odds are a coin flip. But notice something — almost every credible model has ETH higher, not lower, from here. The whales seem to have read the same charts.

The Bottom Line: Fear Is the Price of Admission

Here's what I'll say as someone who watches this market every single day. Sentiment indicators are great at telling you how people feel, and terrible at telling you where prices are going next. Right now they tell us the crowd is scared. The on-chain data tells us the biggest players are calm — calm enough to put $162 million into ETH while everyone else looks away.

That doesn't mean the whales are right. Markets have a long history of humbling confident buyers. But in crypto, the crowd is almost never right at extremes — and this is as extreme as Ethereum's mood has been since June.

So here's my question for you: when the fear is this loud and the smart money is this quiet, which one deserves your attention?

Stay tuned to ethdan.me — I'll be tracking the whale wallets, the ETF flows, and that $2,800 level all month long, and breaking down exactly what it means for your Ethereum playbook.
